The environment as a factor in the formation of trade networks: hillfort settlements in the Eastern Adriatic
Hillfort settlements are founded on suitable naturally elevated positions giving a strategic advantage, especially when it comes to efficient defense. However, there are also other factors conditioning the choice of the position for a permanent settlement. An especially important factor is the position in relation to the main land and maritime communications. Hillforts can thus be studied in the context of their position on or near mountain passes, river valleys serving as natural communications, potential ports or suitable maritime routes in the case of coastal hillfort settlements. The listed factors are observed in the context of the duration of the settlements and their features, as well as in the context of the established contacts, reflected in the present movable finds.
