Recognizing the pre-industrial iron manufacture in the basin of the Drava river – raw materials, processing technology and socio-cultural relationships

The research sheds light on the primary processing of iron in the valley of the Drava river and defines its significance in the context of socio-cultural relationships across different periods. The definitions focus on: 1. the origin of the iron ore; 2. technology of the ore processing; 3. impact of the production on the core area and the broader region. Interdisciplinary research is carried out by using archaeological, geological and geophysical methods, whose results form the basis for: a. soil sampling aimed at recognizing the sources of raw materials; b. target excavations aimed at recognizing changes in the technology of iron processing through the use of different types of furnaces during La Tène, antiquity and the Middle Ages. Samples are analyzed metallographically in order to provide information about the technology of ore processing across different periods. The study of the use of finished Fe goods in daily life serves as the basis for interpreting socio-cultural relationships in the basin of the Drava river, but also in the wider context of Central Europe.
