Northern Adriatic landscape: relationship between humans and space through historical periods

The northern part of the Roman province of Dalmatia is characterized by landscapes consisting of contrary elements—islands, mountains, fertile plains—which have been integrated under human influence in a specific cultural landscape, developed within regional communities through contacts with surrounding areas, whose dynamics are still insufficiently clear, mostly due to the lack of comprehensive archaeological topography.

Through topographic research of these landscapes using information technology we shall try to define a more comprehensive picture of habitation, use of natural resources and communications, as well as to identify changes that each period brings within their relationship.

The first case study, the island of Rab, has been chosen as a closed unit with available historical and initial archaeological information. It is planned to broaden the scope of research to wider northern Adriatic littoral, with possible incorporation of other interdisciplinary methods.
