Communications and the dynamics of the exchange of goods, and their influence on the organization of space in the Eastern Adriatic, with special emphasis on late antiquity

The natural resources of an area dictate the economic activity and exchange of goods, the sale of surplus of produced goods and the procurement of desired goods. Positions on traditional routes are more suitable because they facilitate the exchange of goods, and the historical changes during late antiquity determined and laid out also new routes, maritime ones in particular. The economic circumstances in the Empire, the strengthening of certain parts (e.g. North Africa) in the production of oil, the aggressive penetration into areas with an already developed production, and the domination of that commodity on the general market, suppress the same products from other regions, leaving an impact on the local economy, which is detectable from material remains. The new economic, but also political changes are reflected in the organization of space and the emergence of new models of settlement, as well as in the modification of the existing ones, which are frequently the basis for the development of the area in the subsequent centuries.
