Call for participation in the 10th International Conference on Mediaeval Archaeology of the Institute of Archaeology

Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 10th International Conference on Mediaeval Archaeology, titled Voices from Oblivion: Mortuary Landscapes, Bodies, and Burials in Mediaeval Society organized by the Institute of Archaeology. The conference will take place in Zagreb, Croatia, on 10–11 December 2026.
This conference invites scholars, early-career researchers, and PhD students from archaeology, anthropology, history, ethnology or other related disciplines, to present their research. The chronological scope spans from AD 500 to 1600. We aim to address specific research questions through diverse theoretical and interdisciplinary methodological frameworks. We particularly encourage submissions that present and interpret broader social relations through the analysis of mortuary landscapes, material culture and human remains. Presentations of fundamental research results are also welcome in order to foster discussion, exchange data and acquire new knowledge.
We invite proposals covering, but not limited to, the following research questions:
- Mortuary Landscapes: cemetery placement, relations between settlements and cemeteries, intra-cemetery spatial organization, cemeteries as a place of social memory…
- Diachronic Changes in Burial Rites and Customs
- Funerary Practices and Material Culture: rituals and grave goods as a reflection of gender, social status and/or identities
- Bioarchaeology: diet, isotope analysis, health status, mobility, paleopathology …
- New Methodological Approaches and Innovations in Funerary Archaeology
Participation in the conference is free of charge. The official conference languages are English and Croatian. We kindly ask the participants presenting in Croatian to add visible information in English to their slides. Posters (only in English) are also accepted (vertical length/horizontal width 100 x 70 cm).
Please submit the title and abstract of the podium presentation or poster in English (max. 1800 characters including spaces) to e-mail [javascript protected email address] no later than 15 November 2026. Please attach full contact and affiliation details (name of the author(s), position, affiliation, address, e-mail) to your submission in order for it to be properly listed and published in the Book of Abstracts.
Papers from the conference will be published in an edited volume in the series Zbornik Instituta za arheologiju / Serta Instituti Archaeologici. Please hand in the manuscripts no later than 15 April 2027. All papers are subject to peer review, with publication expected by the end of 2027. The guidelines for authors and the citation style follow those of the journal Prilozi Instituta za arheologiju u Zagrebu and are available at:
