Hrvoje Kalafatić was born in 1977 in Zagreb where he attended primary and secondary school. In 1996, he began studying Archaeology (single major) at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb. He graduated in 2002 with a dissertation in prehistoric archaeology: “A typological-statistical analysis of ceramics from the Mačkovac-Crišnjevi site, season 1997“. He started his graduate studies in archaeology (field: Prehistory) in 2002 and his doctoral studies in 2006. He defended his doctoral dissertation “The Barice-Gređani group and its position in the Bronze Age of the Carpathian Basin“ in 2011 under the mentorship of Prof. Nives Majnarić-Pandžić at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. In 2012, he was appointed to the academic title of research associate. During his studies and after completing them he participated, both as associate and manager, in numerous archaeological investigations led by the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb and other archaeological institutions in Croatia. From 2001 to 2007 he participated in the systematic investigations of the Court of the Dukes of Ilok in Ilok, as expert assistant and deputy manager of the investigations. Since their very beginning in 1997, he has been taking part, as a member of the expert team and later also expert assistant and deputy manager of the investigations, in the systematic excavations of the Mačkovac-Crišnjevi site, conducted by the Nova Gradiška Municipal Museum and the Department of Archaeology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb and later also the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb. For a number of years, he also co-operated and participated in the investigations with the Nova Gradiška Municipal Museum and the Museum of Turopolje in Velika Gorica. In 2007 and 2008 he was site manager at the Čepinski Martinci – Dubrava site. He joined the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb in 2004 as junior researcher, working on several projects. Since 2008, he has been working on the project “The prehistoric identity of the first agricultural populations in continental Croatia “, led first by Dr. Kornelija Minichreiter and since 2010 by Dr. Zorko Marković. He also participated in several conferences in Croatia and abroad with presentations and posters, and he worked on several exhibitions as reviewer and advisor.
